Symbols of Freedom

Fighting for Freedom

During the past two lessons, we have talked quite a bit about the heroes in our nation’s history who fought for our freedom. Remember that President Abraham Lincoln was the leader of the Union during the Civil War. He fought to keep our country united together as one nation and to protect the freedom of all American people. It was not an easy task. Lincoln faced many challenges because some people and some states in the south did not agree with what he wanted for our country. They did not support his goals for our nation. Despite the fights and disagreements, ultimately Lincoln’s vision for our country came true! Even to this day we still have people who continue to fight for us to live freely. The men and women in all branches of the U.S. military help keep our nation safe and free.

Symbols of Freedom

There are other symbols besides the Liberty Bell you might see that represent America being a free country. We see the colors, stars, and stripes on our flag that flies high to remind us of the freedom we have. You may also see a bald eagle like Liberty and be reminded of freedom. The Statue of Liberty in New York is another symbol of freedom. Next time you see one of these symbols, take a moment to be thankful for the country we live in and that we have freedom.
