There are so many worthy examples of men and women that stand out in the over 246 years of our Republic’s history that it is nearly impossible to single out just two. The first example I have chosen was a “Professor of Rhetoric and Received Religion” at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, whose courageous leadership in our American Civil War saw him lead his men through several truly desperate combat situations and rise to the rank of Brevet Major General by the war’s end. Through 24 major battles he was wounded six times and had six horses shot out from beneath him.

After the war he served four terms as Governor of Maine. He returned to Bowdoin College and spent a great deal of the rest of his long life of service teaching and writing his memoires of the Civil War.
