Make an Expedition Journal
Practice: Get ready for some activities.
Activities are designed to be parent- or teacher-supervised.
Step 1
Supplies:
- Brown or tan construction paper or card stock
- 4-5 pieces of white construction paper or printer paper per student
- 18 inch piece of twine or leather cord
- Stapler
Step 2
Fold all the paper in half to create a book using the brown paper as the cover. Staple the spine along the folded edge. Staple the twine or leather in the middle staple to tie the book together. Write a title on the cover and author’s name. Go on an expedition. Go to the playground, back yard, or park. Each of the four days of the lessons students should collect information about the “territory”.

The students should draw a map of the area and label and name points of interest. Then write a sentence or two about events of their expedition (weather, people met, observations that they have etc.)
Day 2
The students should find a plant sample. Draw a detailed picture of the sample, give it a name, and measure the leaves. Then describe where they found it and information about the plant’s size and type (tree, bush, weed, etc.). Then write a sentence or two about events of their expedition (weather, people met, observations that they have, etc.).
Day 3
The students should draw an animal or bug that they see (or if no animals are observed, draw an imaginary animal), give the animal a name, and write a sentence or two about where they saw it how it moved, its size, sounds that it made, etc.) Then write a sentence or two about what events of their expedition (weather, people met, observations that they have, etc.).
Day 4
