Review: Early America

The history and story of the explorer Christopher Columbus show how having faith helped start and advance early American settlements. It also shows there were many communities of people living and thriving in early America before the arrival of those from Europe. There we many other explorers that probably landed in some of the same regions as Columbus, well before his time there. In fact, historians estimate that millions of Native Americans lived throughout many parts of North and South America when European explorers were searching for new trade routes to the west.

Indigenous People have lived throughout the world for thousands of years before outside exploration. Historians have learned much about these groups from records, artifacts, and stories. Around 400 years before Columbus, a group called the Vikings were early North American explorers too. They explored parts of upper North America, now present-day Canada. They farmed, fished, hunted, and settled. But they eventually left these areas. This course will teach you about the Vikings and the importance of global exploration and discovery.

The word Viking means ‘pirate raid.’ It comes from the Old Norse language spoken in Scandinavia during the age of the Vikings.
