Create A 3-D Place In A Colonial Town
Practice: Get ready for some activities.
Activities are designed to be parent- or teacher-supervised.
Activity 1
Watch the video and pay attention to the materials and supplies you will need.
Activity 2
Here is a list of the materials and supplies you will need:
- Paper (Cardstock or construction paper are best for sturdiness)
- Tape
- Glue sticks
- Markers
- Crayons or colored pencils
Step One
Choose a place from a colonial town to create a 3-D model from this list:
- Meeting house- The meeting house was used as a Puritan Church and a place for townspeople to have meetings to discuss issues and make plans.
- Tavern- A tavern was a place where people could get a cooked meal and a drink. People also met and made plans in taverns.
- Coffeehouse- A coffee house was a special or elite tavern, and only gentlemen were allowed in coffeehouses. They served beverages like coffee, tea, and chocolate. Wealthy men would meet to discuss plans and relax.
- Shops- Various shops were built to meet the needs of the people and the shops sold things like shoes, furniture, clothes, wigs, food, etc
- Church- The church was a simple building in the center of town.
- Market square- This was a place where people could meet and trade goods. They could set up temporary booths to sell things like produce, baked goods, and crafts.
- Courthouse- Larger towns had a courthouse where a local judge could hear cases and make rulings and carry out punishments quickly.
- Gaol (Pronounced “Jail”)- This was the town jail.
- Magazine- This was a stone or brick building that held the town’s weapons and ammunition. It was fireproof to protect the contents.
- Post office- This was where mail was delivered and distributed and often also used for the town newspaper. It would often hold a printer and other things needed to help print a newspaper.
Step Two
Create a building (research how to make a 3-D house: draw and cut out 2 pentagons, draw and cut out 2 rectangles, fold large paper for the roof)
Step Three
Tell about your building and what its purpose was during colonial times.
Step Four
If time allows, make more buildings and combine all building models to make a little town!
