Politics: Let's look at how George Washington got into politics.
Here come's George Washington
Washington’s first venture into politics was supporting his friend George William Fairfax in a 1755 bid to be elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses – the elected government of Virginia. After this taste of politics, Washington held local offices before being elected to represent Frederick County in Virginia’s House of Burgesses in 1758. Washington argued against Britain’s taxation policies during his seven years in Virginia’s House of Burgesses.
He strongly opposed taxation without representation by the British Parliament. He called the Stamp Act an ‘act of oppression,’ which means that he thought that the British Parliament was trying to impose its authority over the Colonies. Washington led protests against the Townshend Acts in 1767.
In May 1769, he introduced a proposal for the people of Virginia to boycott British goods. Washington considered other laws that the British tried to pass as an invasion of the rights of the people of the Colonies Washington led calls for a Continental Congress – for the Thirteen Colonies to work together against the British – and was selected to represent Virginia at the First Continental Congress.
