The success of the Americans put an end to the Hessian state of Germany as a mercenary state! The loss of many of their soldiers and craftsmen (estimated by historians as many as 8,000) caused both the German and British countries to put an end to hiring out their troops to fight for other countries. Many of the Hessians chose to stay in America after the war. Johann Dohla, a Hessian soldier that came over to the American side said, “The American land is good and incomparable land…it is rich and fruitful, well cultivated, and with much grain, especially a great deal of corn. It has many beautiful forests of both soft and hardwood trees unknown to us.” This is a fancy way of saying that he, among many of the soldiers, loved the American land and chose to live in a country that valued Faith, Liberty, Community, and Life.
